READING

COMPREHENSION

Students will learn to use reasoning, context clues, and background knowledge to better understand texts that they read. In the process, they will gain fluency and knowledge of new vocabulary words. Using these skills, students will identify main ideas, make inferences, and visualize the text.

COMMUNICATION

Our program offers workshops for tutors to learn about Asian American families and culture. Many of the tutors are actually alumni of JQES.

TEST

PREPARATION

Students will prepare for standardized tests like the PARCC, MCAS, and ISEE by doing practice questions and tests. They will learn how to use test-taking strategies.

MATH

Students will learn the foundations of math according to the standard for their grade. For example, they will practice skills like adding, subtracting, dividing, fractions, decimals, and algebra by doing practice problems.

ENGLISH AS

SECOND LANGUAGE

Students will develop confidence in writing, speaking, reading, and listening to English. They will learn about proper grammatical structures in English and use those skills to increase their fluency in English.

WRITING

Students will learn to express their thoughts and use critical thinking to write descriptive writing pieces. They will learn to write opinionated pieces, persuasive texts, and use background knowledge in their writing.
